Topic: Geometry and Measuration

1. Polygon Shape Matching
http://www.mathplayground.com/Matching_Shapes.html

Maths topic: Polygons (Primary)

  • Pupils are to match the shape to its name.
  • The shapes include kite, pentagon, trapezoid.
  • Prior to doing the activity, pupils should have learnt the different polygons.
  • The activity requires pupils to recall knowledge.

Maths topic: Geometry / Algebra / Number / Statistics

  • The system comes a vocabulary list (with words relating to geometry, algebra, number, statistics).
  • Pupils guess the letters that made up a word.
  • This can be carried out as a trigger or an introduction to the topic, where pupils learn words relating to the topic (Mathematics vocabulary). They can first click at “Hint” to guess what the word is.
  • Alternatively, the activity can be carried out after introduction of the topic, to test pupils’ understanding of the new vocabulary list.

3. Word Search

Maths topic: Several Topics

  • The system comes a vocabulary list (with words relating to geometry, algebra, number, statistics).
  • Pupils can search the word and highlight them on the applet.
This can be carried out as a trigger or an introduction to the topic, where pupils learn words relating to the topic (Mathematics vocabulary). They can find what these words mean.
  • Alternatively, the activity can be carried out after introduction of the topic for pupils to recall the list of words related to the topic.

Maths topic: Geometry – Pattern Recognition [Primary]

  • Given a series, pupils are to observe and select the appropriate shape, number and colour to form the 5th “code” to open the safe.
  • It can be an introduction to the topic where pupils can intuitively identify the shape and colour; perhaps need some help in the numbers?
  • Alternatively, it can be used as a practice to reinforce the learning.

5. Airlines Builder

Maths topic: Area and Perimeter [Primary]

  • Pupils are given a number of sticks to create an enclosed figure, starting with 10 sticks.
  • On completion, the perimeter and area are shown.
  • Pupils will have to attempt all the combinations before moving on to the next level (with an increased number of sticks).
  • This activity can be used to introduce area and perimeter. Pupils will also learn that for figures of the same perimeter, they can of different areas.

6. Point of the View

Maths topic: Nets [Upper Primary/Lower Secondary]

  • Given the 3D objects, pupils are to figure out the view of the object from their perspective.
  • The activity allows them to practise and sharpen their observation skills.

7. Cyberchase: Star Gazing
http://pbskids.org/cyberchase/games/anglemeasurement/

Maths topic: Angles [Primary]

  • Pupils type in the angle to position the telescope. To do this, they are to use the protractor to help identifying the angle.
  • This activity serves as a practice.

Maths topic: Shapes and Geometry [Upper Primary/Lower Secondary]

  • The objective is to save the world by blasting imposter shapes with your golden hexagons.
  • Pre-requisite: Pupils are able to recognise 2D shapes and 3D solids.
  • This activity serves as a practice.
